No reason given for departure, no replacement named

Markus Weber, the deputy minister of the Department of Executive, will leave his Government of Nunavut job as of July 29, Premier Eva Aariak announced April 15 in a new release.

Weber, a lawyer, has served in the position since November 2008. Prior to that date, he served as deputy minister of the justice department, which he was appointed to in October 2004.

The deputy minister of Executive, who reports to the premier, is the most senior unelected civil servant in the GN.

The duties include supervision and evaluation of other deputy ministers and overall responsibility for ensuring the civil service carries out the decisions of cabinet.

The announcement gave no reason for Weber’s departure and did not name a replacement.

Aariak’s office says the GN will conduct a search to find a replacement “in the coming months.”

Weber’s other job titles included Secretary to Cabinet, and Secretary to the Senior Personnel Secretariat.

“Markus is a strong member of our team and has led the senior executive team of our public service through many challenges,” said Aariak said in the news release.

“On behalf of the Government of Nunavut, I would like to thank him for his dedication and his years of competent work, and wish him the very best in all future endeavours.”
