Spring thaw uncovers corpse at CamBay graveyard

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The RCMP in Cambridge Bay are conducting an investigation after melting snow uncovered a body near the community’s cemetery.

Sgt. Jimmy Akavak said local police are trying to determine how the body got above ground.

He said the body was found near an area where snow plows operate, and that it’s possible Cambridge Bay snow removal vehicles may be responsible.

He said it’s also possible that the body may have emerged due to erosion during the spring thaw.

Vandalism is not suspected, Akavak said.

A police statement said that the body was buried in October 2009, said police won’t identify the deceased person out of respect for their next of kin.
