Makivik claims harassment by Quebec wildlife officers
Around Nunavik: 2008-05-30
The Makivik Corp. wants Quebec wildlife officers to stop their "harassment" of Inuit beneficiaries who attempt to take fish or wildlife out of the region.
In May 27 press release, Makivik said that their president, Pita Aatami, recently intervened when an elderly Inuk woman's luggage was searched at the airport in Montreal.
This past Feb. 13, Quebec wildlife officials posted an announcement all over Nunavik warning non-beneficiaries that it's illegal to transport country food out of the region without a permit. Beneficiaries may do it for private consumption.
Makivik says they'll take legal action if the "harassment" doesn't stop.
