KRG elects new leaders

Maggie Emudluk will lead the Kativik Regional Government for another two years, after her re-election last week by KRG members at a council meeting in Kuujjuaq.

Emudluk, a municipal and regional councillor from Kangiqsualujjuaq, was chosen to chair the KRG regional council by acclamation, as was the council's vice-chairperson, Aisara Kenuajuak, a municipal and regional councillor from Puvirnituq.

Joseph Annahatak, Kangirsuk's mayor and regional councillor, Eli Aullaluk, Akulivik's municipal and regional councillor, and Johnny Oovaut, Quaqtaq's mayor and regional councillor, were also elected as executives by the regional council.

Regional councillors from the communities with populations greater than 500 – Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kuujjuaq, Kangiqsujuaq, Salluit, Akulivik, Puvirnituq, Inukjuak and Kuujjuaraapik – received two votes during the council elections, while other communities had one vote.

Andy Moorhouse, the regional councillor for Inukjuak, became the KRG council's new speaker.

The council also selected members of other regional and provincial boards:

  • Robbie Tookalook, Mary Pirlutuut and Aisara Kenuajuak to the Kativik Municipal Housing Board;
  • Mary Pirlutuut, Joseph Annahatak and Johnny Oovaut to the Northern Indigenous Community Satellite Network;
  • Johnny Oovaut and David Lucassie to the Makitautik halfway house;
  • Maggie Emudluk, Aisara Kenuajuak and Eli Aullaluk to the Kativik Regional Development Council;
  • Mary Pirlutuut to the Nunavik Tourism Association, Andy Moorhouse to the Native Para-judicial Services of Quebec;
  • Eli Aullaluk to the Kativik School Board, Andy Moorhouse to the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services;
  • Eli Aullaluk, Johnny Oovaut and Adamie Papigatuk to Nunavik Investment Services;
  • Adamie Papigatuk and David Lucassie to the Nunavik Mineral Exploration Fund.
