Two men badly beaten in late night brawl
'The youth are out of control'
Two men were badly beaten in Kangiqsujuaq during the early morning hours of Sept. 27.
"The youth in the community are out of control," said Const. Jeff Marcoux with the Kativik Regional Police Force in Kangiqsujuaq.
"Over the last few nights we've had nothing but complaints, about doors kicked in, windows being broken, joyriders being out at all hours of the night, fleeing from the police, having to be pursued by the police, causing property damage and assaults."
Police say the incident involved four young men in a dispute with two other older men. Both older men were treated for head and facial injuries at the local health clinic.
Marcoux said weapons were involved, but could not confirm the allegation that the younger men wielded hockey sticks during the altercation.
Police had not pressed charges against suspects before the deadline of Nunatsiaq News.
Marcoux said he and the other constable are trying to manage the escalating number of criminal incidents involving youth. He said some young people stay out late because their parents are drinking and they don't want to go home.
Last week, police seized a shipment with an estimated $1,000 worth of alcohol bound for the alcohol-controlled community.
"The municipality, mayor, council members, Kativik Regional Government, Makivik Corp., social services, youth protection and other mental health care workers has to stem these violent outbreaks before someone else will be murdered once again. And another family will lose a loved one," said a Nunatsiaq News reader about the most recent violent incident in Kangiqsujuaq.
