'Communications' error blamed for NAM no-show

By CHRIS WINDEYER

Cambridge Bay didn't have a representative at last month's annual general meeting of the Nunavut Association of Municipalities, but it was because of an communication error, says the hamlet's deputy mayor.

Syd Glawson said Cambridge Bay was never contacted about the date of the meeting, held late last month in Rankin Inlet

"We're still a member and we intend on being a member," Glawson said. "To the best of my knowledge NAM is performing their duties as per the wishes of their membership and their board and until it is discovered different, NAM has our support."

Elisapee Sheutiapik, Iqaluit's mayor and president of NAM, said Cambridge Bay didn't get a fax confirming the date of the meeting.

"Sometimes that happens," she said. "When you have a board member from a community you just assume that information funnels through from a member."

Cambridge Bay's mayor, Michelle Gillis, is also the NAM board member for the community. She did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.

Lynda Gunn, NAM's chief executive officer, said Gillis was on the committee that struck the date for the meeting.

Gunn said Gillis was double-booked and tried to have the date of the meeting changed.

"We weren't prepared to do that because the dates were already set," she said. The request came after the dates had been advertised. NAM must give 30 days notice in advance of an annual general meeting.

The AGM also ran out of time to finish all its business, Gunn said. Communities will meet by teleconference to vote on a list of resolutions left over from the session.

Last month, Baker Lake pulled out of NAM over concerns about the organization's effectiveness. The hamlet also didn't have any representation at the meeting.

Sheutiapik said NAM's board is still working on a statement in response to Baker Lake's move, but it likely won't be released until after NAM officials meet with the hamlet's council.
