Active COVID-19 cases in Nunavik drop to 54
Health board conducting ‘blitz’ to encourage vaccination during lead-up to holidays
Nunavik reported six new COVID-19 cases Wednesday though the region’s active caseload dipped to 54.
Wednesday’s numbers are the lowest since October as the region’s outbreak has slowly begun to die down. There are currently no hospitalizations, but most public health restrictions, including gathering limits and closing of non-essential businesses, remain in place.
The Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services says it’s conducting a “blitz” to encourage vaccination during the lead-up to Christmas.
“This blitz is for everyone who wants to get vaccinated, including 5-11-year-olds,” the board said in a Facebook post.
Nunavik continues to struggle with a low vaccination rate across. Figures posted by the health board show that only 48 per cent of the total population and 63 per cent of the population 12 and older had been fully vaccinated as of last week. Those numbers may change in the coming days as the region has begun vaccinating the five-to-11 age group.
As of Nov. 30, people ages 12 and up can only fly in and out of Nunavik if they can provide proof of vaccination.
