Advanced voting in Nunavik nearly complete

Elections Canada still seeking workers for Oct. 21 vote in some communities

By Nunatsiaq News

Weather delays have kept Elections Canada staff from completing their advanced voting tour in Nunavik by a few days, but it should wrap up this weekend.

With clearer skies, advanced voting is planned for Salluit and Ivujivik on Oct. 10, followed by Umiujaq and Kuujjuaraapik in the next two days as long as weather permits, said Bob Carroll, Elections Canada’s representative for the region.

The tour of communities for advanced voting started on Oct. 4, and these are the final four stops for voting prior to election day.

“October 21 is the national day for voting, and the final day,” said Carroll. “If you want to exercise your right to vote, it’s your only chance.”

There may still be positions open for people interested in working at polling stations on election day.

Carroll suggested contacting the Northern Village or Elections Canada’s Kuujjuaq office at 1-866-271-4355.

Elections Canada staff will be available every day leading up to the election to answer questions residents might have.

I have heard there may not be a polling station here in Quaqtaq on October 21st. Wondering if there is any truth to this rumour. Hopefully we will be able to vote like every other Canadian citizen.
