Akesuk owes more than $10,000 in back rent

Sustainable Development Minister Olayuk Akesuk and his wife Lao owe more than $10,000 in back rent to the municipality of Cape Dorset, disclosure statements from the Government of Nunavut show.

The statements filed last month by all MLAs contain a range of information, with some members declaring no possessions whatsoever, and others declaring their household incomes.

The form asked Akesuk to disclose liabilities greater than $10,000, but did not ask him for the exact amount.

MLAs are required by the Integrity Act to disclose big-ticket items and interests in companies that may pose a conflict of interest.

Finance Minister Kelvin Ng disclosed his shares in Enokhok Development Corporation Ltd. of Cambridge Bay, which is held in blind trust.

Education Minister Peter Kilabuk disclosed his interest in Cumberland Sound Fisheries Ltd. of Pangnirtung, which is part owner of Pang Fisheries Ltd.

Only elected members are required to provide disclosure to the public, however the integrity commissioner, Robert Stanbury, has suggested that deputy ministers and assistant deputy ministers be required to do so as well.
