Alert Ready to be tested on Wednesday

Emergency alerts to be tested on TVs, cellphones and other devices

By Nunatsiaq News

Most Canadians will hear an alarm sound through their radio, TV and compatible wireless devices Wednesday as part of an annual test of the National Public Alerting System.

The federal Department of Public Safety announced the test Monday in a news release.

Nunavut and Quebec’s alerts are scheduled for 1:55 p.m. EDT.

The system is used to inform the public about potential hazards like natural disasters, fires, threats to national security and Amber Alerts.

National Public Alerting System is also known by its public-facing brand name Alert Ready, and is a collaboration between the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

Some mobile devices may not receive the alert due to device compatibility, network connection or software settings.

Regular testing and evaluation of the National Public Alerting System is required by the CRTC to ensure the Government of Canada’s readiness to deliver critical information to the public.

All provinces and territories are taking part in the test Wednesday except Ontario, where it’s scheduled for May 15.
