Close to two dozen ambassadors from as far away as New Zealand visited the increasingly popular Arctic cruise port of Pond Inlet on Tuesday.

The visit was one stop on the Northern Tour 2023 hosted by Global Affairs Canada, the federal foreign affairs department. Delegates spent the past several days touring various communities in northern Canada, including Cambridge Bay and Resolute Bay.

The ambassadors were treated to demonstrations of Inuit songs, dancing, traditional games and drumming. They were also taken on a short walking tour of the area, said Pond Inlet chief administrative officer David Stockley.

“The ambassadors I spoke to, they were really into Inuit culture,” he said.

The community only had three weeks to get everything together, but it all went smoothly, Stockley said.

He added the area is becoming a tourist destination with several ships each year stopping in the community. It was great to showcase the area to leaders from all over the world, Stockley said.

Just because cruise ships dock there, doesn’t make it a “tourist destination”.
