Amittuq constituency 1st to report election night results

Abraham Qammaniq takes early lead in Qikiqtaaluk region riding with 1 of 4 polls reporting

Amittuq was the first riding to report early results in Iqaluit’s territorial election Monday night, with 214 votes counted so far in one of four polls in the riding.

Abraham Qammaniq took a strong lead with 102 votes. Roger Beaudry followed with 47 votes, Reena Irqittuq had 34 and Paul Hauli had 31. The poll that reported is in Sanirajak; the constituency also includes Igloolik.

The riding’s average age is 24, according to statistics compiled by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. Fewer than 15 per cent of its population graduated high school. More than 90 per cent speak Inuktitut.
