An open-minded Inuk supports gay marriage

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

This is in response to the letter to the editor published May 30, 2003, “Most Nunavummiut oppose gay marriage.”

Well, I would not say that it is most Nunavummiut who are opposed to gay rights and marriages. For all we know, Nunavummiut might be more open-minded, then some individuals who are ready to cast the first stone.

When individuals wish to marry, it is there prerogative whether they are gay or otherwise. As long as they are soul-mates and there is love, I do not see why they should be ridiculed for thinking of staying with one person for as long as they love each other, as do the regular people.

The MLA’s should not be threatened for not opposing gay marriages! I for one will not vote for an individual who is against something they have no control over, who are playing God and are passing judgment! Enoki – you are not da man!

If the creator or God made them the way they are, why are they being judged for something they have no control over? The letter reminded me of a God which was introduced to me in Chesterfield Inlet, a God who is judgmental, who is ready to denounce and cast away anyone who is not perfect.

The God that I know now does not ridicule nor pass judgement on people, only the humans will pass judgement on others of their own kind. Why should anyone oppose someone else’s marriage?

They are not going to be present within the home environment of the individuals who wish to marry! From an open-minded Inuk of the Amittuq riding.
