Arctic Winter Games draw to a close
Nunavut finishes weeklong event with 66 medals; Nunavik’s haul stands at 27
A silver medal in boys under-18 futsal on the final day of the Arctic Winter Games pushed Team Nunavut’s medal count to 66 as the weeklong games ended Saturday.
Team Yukon beat Nunavut 6-4 in the gold medal game in futsal, an indoor game similar to soccer. Futsal medal games were the last events on the schedule for the games.
Nunavut walked away from Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley, where the games were held from March 10 to 16, with 23 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze medals.
Team Nunavik ended the competition with 27 medals — eight gold, 11 silver and eight bronze medals.
Host Alaska had the highest medal count with 221, including 70 gold, 85 silver and 66 bronze.
The Arctic Winter Games is an annual sports event featuring athletes from seven northern teams — Nunavut, Nunavik, the Northwest Territories, northern Alberta, Alaska, Greenland and Finland.
The games ended Saturday with a closing ceremony where athletes from all the teams had a chance to mingle and celebrate their achievements during the games.
