Arctic volcanoes home to worms?
Two underwater volcanoes between Greenland and Siberia may harbour a warmer climate in their depths — creating just the kind of mineral-rich conditions deep-sea creatures favour.
Last year, a nuclear-powered submarine mounted with sonar equipment took the first underwater photos of the volcanoes.
According to the journal Nature, next year researchers plan to send a camera down 4,000 metres to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. There it will scout for what’s known as a “bloom” — a place where molten rock meets cold water and giant clams and tube worms thrive.
