Sanikiluaq’s superb principal: Lisi Kavik
On March 20 in the Nunavut legislature, Hudson Bay MLA Peter Kattuk recognized Lisi Kavik, the co-principal of Nuiyak School in Sanikiluaq, who was recently chosen as one of Canada’s outstanding principals for 2007 by the Learning Partnership.
The group is a not-for-profit organization that promotes public education in Canada.
One of Kavik’s biggest challenges as principal is getting the community involved with the school because of their negative experiences at residential schools in the past, Kattuk said.
Kavik is a graduate of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program and is currently enrolled in a master of education program through Nunavut Arctic College, the University of Prince Edward Island and St. Francis Xavier University.
