Illness may remove city councillor

An Iqaluit city councillor suffering from a serious illness may resign his seat on council.

At Iqaluit’s regular city council meeting Jan. 9, Clinton Mauthe, the chief administrative officer, read an email from Coun. Mark Boudreau, who has been in Ottawa dealing with an illness for several weeks.

Boudreau wrote that his medical condition is very serious and he may have to stay in Ottawa for three to six months. He will know for sure after more testing is completed Jan. 11.

“If this is the case, if council wishes me to resign, I will,” he said in the email.

Coun. Glenn Williams suggested the matter be deferred to the next council meeting.

Recorder Sandi Taylor told council that members might attend meetings over the phone if necessary. “Maybe that’s something we can work out with him,” Taylor said.
