An Arviat man has been charged with arson following a residential fire on Friday, says Nunavut RCMP.

Melvin Irksuk, 23, has also been charged with uttering threats.

The fire caused “extensive” damage to the residential unit, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Pauline Melanson.

The police were called to the fire around 5:45 a.m. and the fire department was already on scene when they arrived, Melanson said.

Nobody was injured in the fire and it is not known whether drugs or alcohol were involved, she said.

Melanson said she did not know how many people live in the home or whether they were displaced because of the fire.
