Assistance for elders in the works

Quebec City may act on the recent survey of elders in Nunavik, which painted an alarming picture of how the oldest and most traditional Inuit of this region live, by taking new measures to make their life easier.

A Socio-economic Profile of Elders in Nunavik, prepared by Université Laval, showed Nunavik’s 419 elders need urgent assistance.

Based on this report’s findings, the Quebec government is looking at how to adapt old age security benefits so these will better reflect the higher cost of living in Nunavik. As well, the KRG may receive assistance to ensure elders access the programs they are entitled to.

“It should help,” Louis Mercier, who represents the KRG in Quebec City, told KRG councilors.
