Baby sitting in the legislature
Deputy Premier Pamela Gross introduced the “newest constituent of Ikaluktutiak” (Cambridge Bay) — her newborn daughter, Qimniq Simone Algik Wamikon Adjun Oniak, on the first day of the Nunavut legislative assembly’s fall sitting Thursday. She was born on Sept. 11. Speaker Tony Akoak, the MLA for Gjoa Haven, broke into a smile as the baby girl was introduced. “I know she’s familiar with this house, Mr. Speaker, because she’s been here the last two sessions with us,” Gross, the MLA for Cambridge Bay, said to chuckles from the assembly. “But she probably finds everyone’s voice very soothing and calming.” Note: This caption was updated Oct. 20, to include the baby’s full name.
