Back on the bus

The city of Iqaluit may get back into busing.

This week the city called on interested businesses to submit proposals addressing how an Iqaluit bus service would run and how much it would cost.

The bu about busing in Iqaluit surfaced during the taxi strike in March. Some residents — who had come to rely on taxis to get to work and around town — told city officials a bus system would be good for Iqaluit.

But Hough said he’s not sure Iqalungmiut will see a public transit system anytime soon.

“We’re skeptical. I’ll be quite honest. We’re skeptical that we can support a full transit system. But we are willing to look into it,” Hough said.

In the early 1980s, a local bus service went belly-up after rider fees failed to cover the cost of bringing the buses to Iqaluit.
