Baffin Business Development Corp. seeks scholarship applicants

Two awards of $1,000 will go to students enrolled in post-secondary business or commerce programs

If you’re studying business at a post-secondary level, you still have more than two weeks to apply for a Baffin Business Development Corp. scholarship.

This year, the BBDC plans to award two $1,000 scholarships to students enrolled in a post-secondary institution and working towards a certificate or degree in business or commerce.

To be eligible, you must also be from Nunavut’s Qikiqtani region and apply by Aug. 31.

Last year, Anastasia Webb of Iqaluit, a student of business accounting at Algonquin College in Ottawa, received one of the BBDC scholarships.

The BBDC said Webb received the scholarship because she told them she wants to use her education in accounting and commerce to return to Nunavut and “give back” to her community.

To apply, fill out a form available from the BBDC and write a short 500-word essay on why you have chosen to pursue an education in business or commerce.

Proof of acceptance to a post-secondary institution will also be necessary.

The BBDC scholarship was created in 2018.

The BBDC’s mandate is to provide financial assistance and advisory services to new or expanding small businesses that will create new wealth and new jobs for the region’s residents.

The BBDC also administers an investment fund that is used to provide loans, loan guarantees or equity investments to eligible businesses to a maximum of $250,000 per business.
