Men charged in connection with a violent assault in Cambridge Bay in July were released on bail with their matters adjourned to November.

“We need to meet with the clients and we have sort of a voluminous disclosure that needs to be reviewed,” said Marie-Josée Lafleur defence lawyer for Hadi Alhashesh.

Alhashesh, 19, of Chilliwack, B.C., along with Ly Gabriel Galido, 22, of Edmonton; and Ayaan Kamran Warsi, 18, of Edmonton are co-accused in the same matter, but all have their own defence lawyers and will appear together in Iqaluit courtroom on Nov. 3

They face multiple charges including two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of forcible confinement, robbery with a firearm, and trafficking a controlled substance.

All three appeared in front of a Justice of Peace on Sept. 4 and were released on bail. Bail hearings determine whether an arrested person should be released from custody while awaiting trial.

The three were charged following a violent assault July 8 in Cambridge Bay that sent two men to an Edmonton hospital and prompted Cambridge Bay Mayor Wayne Gregory, MLA Pamela Gross and RCMP Supt. Kent Pike to host a community meeting after the incident to address residents’ fears over public safety.

A fourth co-accused, 19-year-old Joshua MacPherson of Cambridge Bay is charged with two counts of assault, but was released and is scheduled to appear in court in Cambridge Bay on Dec 1.
