A Baker Lake artist known for her sculptures and textile work is the recipient of the 2023 Commissioner’s Art Award.

Nancy Pukirngnak Aupaluktuq will take home a $10,000 prize, according to a news release from the office of Nunavut Commissioner Eva Aariak.

Aariak’s office announced the prize May 8.

“[Aupaluktuq] has the extraordinary ability to capture Inuit lifestyle and beliefs before colonialism and celebrate Inuit language and culture through her art and by sharing her skills with others,” Aariak said in the release.

“The artistic vision of Nancy Pukirngnak Aupaluktuq gives Inuit a sense of their unique place in the world and showcases our language, culture and traditions to a worldwide audience.”

Aupaluktuq’s works have been featured in several galleries and exhibitions over the years.

Last year, a red amauti she designed was one of five displayed at the Nunavut legislative assembly as part of a Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada initiative to raise awareness of missing and murdered Inuit women and girls.
