BCC employee wins long service award

IQALUIT — Long-time Iqaluit resident Harry Qaumariaq received the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal last week for 22 years service with the Baffin Correctional Centre.
Justice Minister Jack Anawak presented the medal to Qaumariaq’s wife inside the legislative assembly chambers, on Feb. 11. Due to a small accident on the way to receiving his award, Qaumariaq was unable to attend.
Emotions ran high at the ceremony, as many family members and former collegues gathered together for it.
After the ceremony, various types of country food and a decorated chocolate cake were available.

The medal was established June 11. 1984. To receive the award, employees must have a minimum of 20 years service in corrections.
During Qaumariaq’s tenure at the Baffin Correctional Centre, he worked on the on-the-land program, and transmitted useful skills to inmates such as small engine repair and carpentry skills, says a press release from the Nunavut government.
