Beware of dangerous new synthetic opioid, says Nunavut RCMP
Isotonitazene pills are more powerful than fentanyl

Nunavut residents should watch out for a dangerous new synthetic opioid that has entered Canada’s underground drug market, say Nunavut’s RCMP.
The substance is called isotonitazene and it’s a synthetic drug, which means it’s manufactured from artificial chemicals rather than natural substances.
The pills in circulation are white with a triangular shape and could have an “M” or a “P” stamped on one side and an “8” on the other.
And because of the way they are presented, the isotonitazene pills can fool people into thinking they’re consuming a different drug.
Police say it’s similar to fentanyl, but much stronger. That means those who suffer from an overdose of isotonitazene need several doses of naloxone to recover.
“Anyone who consumes the drug should seek immediate medical attention,” the RCMP said in a news release on Tuesday, March 10.
So far, isotonitazene pills have not been found in Nunavut, but the police say they want people in the territory to be aware of it.
Earlier this month, Global News reported that the police in Saint John, New Brunswick, have been finding isotonitazene on the city’s streets.
Police in Halifax have also come across the drug while conducting an investigation.
“RCMP would like to advise residents to always exercise caution when ingesting unknown drugs and consuming alcohol. Please be mindful of the harmful and life-altering consequences they may cause through excessive use,” the police news release said.
Nunavut residents can contact the police through 867-979-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
