Iqaluit residents can expect to hear noise from blasting and drilling work that will start Thursday at the construction site of Aqqusariaq, the Nunavut Recovery Centre.
The Aqqusariaq site is across the street from the Arctic Winter Games Arena.
In a news release Wednesday, the City of Iqaluit advised residents that blasting and drilling will occur daily between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. until Oct. 12.
The blast safety radius is 50 metres. Blast mattresses will be used to increase safety at the site and notices will be placed on signs surrounding the worksite, the news release said.
Residents and employees will receive warnings prior to each blast. Airport operations will also be notified.
Five minutes before a detonation, all employees will move to a safe location where a head count will be conducted. As well, patrollers will be stationed at all the entry sites to the blast location to prevent people from getting within the blast radius.
Then 15 seconds before the blast, the city said, there will be 12 short siren alerts followed by one long siren sound.
Following the detonation, the release states, “the blaster will verify the blast result and if all is secure, he will sound one long siren and reopen the project area to all workers.”
Is that supposed to be aqqusaarvik not aqqusariaq??
