The City of Iqaluit is advising residents to stay home because of a blizzard in the area, according to a city news release issued Friday morning.
City services, including water delivery, waste management, garbage pickup and snow removal, are being suspended as a result. City facilities are also shut down.
Winds of up to 80 kilometres an hour on top of 15 centimetres of snow have been reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The Aqsarniit, Inuksuk, Joamie and Nakasuk schools in Iqaluit will also be closed, according to the Iqaluit District Education Authority.
Emergency services will be provided unless it is unsafe or the weather is impossible to manage. Delays in emergency services can be expected.
Canadian North’s Friday flights were being cancelled and rescheduled, according to an update from the company. Canadian North’s services in Iqaluit, which include cargo operations and the Amazon Hub, are shut down for the day.
Iqalummiut are being reminded to keep their vehicles off the road. The city says vehicles that have been abandoned and are blocking the road during snow clearing operations can be impounded and the owner of the vehicle can be fined.
The city will not be responsible for any damage to a vehicle on the road during a snow clearing operation, according to the city’s news release.

Blizzard days are a pain in my ass.
You get the morning off and then the afternoon is spent “on-call” for however long it takes someone to figure out what is going on.
Typical.
I’ll trade you for my full workday.
Good deal. I like my job and I’d rather be productive than waste my time waiting.
… be productive, he says on a news forum from his work computer.
.
I like my family and I’d rather get paid to spend my time with them than spend my day in an office. It’s your choice to waste your time. Do a load of laundry, read a book, read and comment on online news (from home), you’re getting paid for it all, don’t complain.
That first line reeks of projection.
You do what makes you happy; be as unproductive as you like … we got you.
As one of Iqaluit’s few working wheels I reserve the right to squeek. So I’ll complain just as much as I like.
Remember when real blizzards were a thing?
I was wondering about this too. The storm we had today is surely not news worthy, and not a Blizzard to start with.
At least some snow on the ground and more to come. I can hear the sleds already coming.
No posted announcement for the afternoon yesterday… Shows me our new government couldn’t make an informed decision until beyond last minute and all they did was update the GN hotline. Shows weakness and the notion of ‘I am unsure of what to do in this situation’……………..
I sat home and waited and waited meanwhile was working from home to ensure things were being handled as needed. Why am I more responsible and available to make decisions moreso than our government??? Why???
