Boil water advisory issued for Qikiqtarjuaq after contamination discovered

Residents of Qikiqtarjuaq have been told to boil their water after contamination was detected in the community’s reservoir.

The Nunavut Department of Health issued the boil water advisory Monday evening, citing concerns over water safety following what it called the “reported” discontinuation of cartridge filtration.

Officials say water must be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before it is safe to use for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, preparing infant formula, making ice cubes or juices, and washing fruits and vegetables.

Residents are reminded to use camp stoves outdoors if boiling water in order to avoid carbon monoxide buildup indoors.

The department said the advisory will remain in effect until the water supply is confirmed safe.
