Bomb-threat prank at Inuksuk High

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A bomb threat at Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit proved to be a false alarm on Tuesday, and RCMP constable Chris Coles was not impressed with the time that police wasted searching for explosives.

“People have to realize that this is not a joke,” Coles said.

The result of the prank call was that the school had to be evacuated while RCMP officers and emergency workers from the City of Iqaluit cordoned off the area and searched the building.

A majority of police officers in Iqaluit were at the scene for several hours.

“It takes valuable resources away from important work,” Coles says, adding that the search is “labour intensive.” Coles would not give details on how police conduct the search, but noted that they respond thoroughly to any threat, in case it’s not a hoax.

This was the first bomb threat of the new school year. Last year, pranksters made four bomb threats in Iqaluit: two at Inuksuk, one at Joamie School and one at Nakusuk elementary school.
