Bomb prank not so funny for teen boys

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

RCMP have reached an out-of-court disposition for two teenagers who admitted to phoning a bomb threat to Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit.

Police arrested the two students at the school on Jan. 20 for calling the head office during lunch-hour earlier this month and telling the principal there was a bomb in the school.

Cst. Chris Coles said police declined to press formal charges, because they believe using restorative justice is more appropriate in this case.

Coles said the youth agreed to a program where they would listen to presentations by emergency services, the fire department, police and others to help them understand the dangers of what they did.

“Court procedures can be long and we thought in a case like this that it’s important to show them [the youths] the consequence of what they thought was a little prank,” Coles said.

Investigators found no evidence linking the high school bomb threat with another bomb threat earlier this week. The latest false alarm happened at Aqsarniik Middle School on Jan. 26. Police evacuated the building, but found no bomb.

Anyone with information in the unsolved bomb threat is asked to phone 979-1111.
