Boy drowns after plunge from raft

A nine-year old boy drowned recently in Akulivik when he and a group of friends were playing by a river near the village. The victim, who did not know how to swim, was playing on a piece of styrofoam in the water when witnesses say he panicked and fell into the cold water.

At this time of year, a strong current runs through the river.

The body of Juani Alayko was found by searchers the following day.
