Break-in blitz hits Iqaluit
IQALUIT — Thieves hit a number of Iqaluit businesses this week, breaking into buildings, stealing items and causing damage.
In the early morning hours of Jan. 23, people smashed through a window in the Baffin Gas Bar and stole a variety of items, including the store’s cash register.
Between the hours of 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on the same day there was a break and enter at the Northmart store in Iqaluit.
“That was a case more of damage than theft, because they appear to have been scared off when the alarm went off,” said Sgt. Mike O’Malley of the Iqaluit RCMP.
On Wednesday, he told Nunatsiaq News. the gas bar had been hit by break-ins two more times since the initial incident last Saturday.
Nunanet, Iqaluit’s Internet service provider, was also broken into when the thieves hit the gas bar, he said. Police are still investigating the incidents, O’Malley said, and suspect that same people may be involved in all of them.
“We have suspicions, but we don’t have anything yet,” O’Malley said.
