British Columbian falls in love with Rankin Inlet
‘My Corner of Our Land’ – Nunatsiaq News readers reflect on Nunavut Day
To celebrate Nunavut Day, Nunatsiaq News invited readers to share what makes their corner of the territory special to them.
I am a new Nunavummiuq, having only been here for a few months, but in those few months I have grown to love my corner of your land!
I come from the crazy city of Surrey, B.C. Almost a million people on its own, with another 2.6 million people in Vancouver!
The roads are busy, people can be rude, the pollution is horrible, and the pace is frantic, if not downright scary! Everyone is climbing over everyone else to get their piece of whatever they are fighting for.
I am falling in love with Nunavut, particularly Rankin Inlet.
The open spaces are filled with awesome beauty, sometimes you just have to look hard at the lichens and rocks but it is there.
The people are very friendly, always ready with a smile and a quick Atelihai. You don’t have to go far to see kids playing, elders chatting, and families gathering as a community.
To keep me busy, I go fishing, walking, go for a drive, or jump on my “Honda” and head to a lake or stream and watch the people, look for wildlife, or just enjoy the evening sun, still up and warm at 10 p.m.! We’ll see how it goes when winter comes!
This might not be my hometown, like it is yours, but this is my home in the North, and I really like it!
Doug Hilton lives is originally from Surrey, B.C., but moved to Rankin Inlet a few months ago.
I’ve always been surprised by the lack of west coasters living up in nunavut. Crazy to think but things are actually often cheaper in nunavut than bc
In the 3 months he has lived in Rankin Inlet, the only thing cheaper there is gas. Food, rent, and going out for meals are cheaper in Surrey. In Surrey I am close to the US border so I can get many things for cheaper. He did not move to Rankin Inlet to save money 🙂 let’s not even talk about travel and the cost of flights for that lol
I’m not. The exact opposite, honestly. I lived in BC for a bit and it’s a much better quality of life than anywhere in Nunavut. I only moved back here for my career.
