Officials in the southern Siberian region of Kaosh-Agach want to see a 2,500 year old mummy, called “The Ice Maiden,” reburied.

The mummy is being studied by archeologists in the city of Novosibirsk.

But only the mummy’s reburial will end the earthquakes and other problems in the region, say leaders.

“People say the failure to rebury the mummy has brought a string of misfortunes and I respect their opinions,” the region’s head administrator told the Daily Telegraph. “It is not only a question of earthquakes, but there is a rising incidence of suicide and sickness…only by reburying the mummy can we lay the spirits to rest and calm people’s fears.”

The Ice Maiden was found in the permafrost of the mountains, surrounded by a burial sacrifice of six horses.
