A Cambridge Bay man has been convicted of sexually touching a 13-year-old girl in 2019.
Allen Kanayok, 65, was found guilty June 3 of one count of sexual interference of a person under 16.
The complainant went to the accused’s home to visit a friend, Justice W.H. Goodridge noted in his June 3 decision.
“While waiting and looking out the living room window from inside the home, the complainant says that the accused took her by the wrist and pulled her onto his lap and started rubbing her on the outside of her pants around her private parts, front and back,” Goodridge said.
Nunatsiaq News cannot name the complainant and witnesses due to a publication ban.
The main question of the trial was whether it was established beyond a reasonable doubt that the incident, as described by the complainant, occurred.
“The determination of that issue depended substantially on the court’s assessment of the credibility and reliability of the complainant,” Goodridge said, adding that he determined the victim’s accusations to be credible.
A sentencing hearing has not bee scheduled yet.
