Car rams girl, races off

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A 16-year-old Iqaluit girl was sent south for medical treatment after a car hit her while she walked along Apex Road early Saturday morning.

The girl suffered injuries that Iqaluit RCMP described as “non-life-threatening.” As of Monday afternoon she was in stable condition at an Ottawa hospital.

The driver, Jeremiah Veevee, 25, stopped briefly after hitting the girl and then sped off. About 10 hours later he turned himself in to police.

Veevee was charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm. He will appear in court in Iqaluit Sept. 4.

If found guilty, Veevee could spend up to 10 years in jail.
