Caribou coming through
David Kakuktinniq of Rankin Inlet took this photo of caribou near his community on July 14. “There have been tons of caribou coming through #rankininlet #nunavut recently, here’s an image of some stragglers,” he writes. (Photo by David Kakuktinniq)

That’s a beautiful photograph, David. It’s well-composed, authentic, and we can sense their urgency; and feel how this group wants to push on and stay with their herd. Speaking personally, I really like that your colours are real-on-the-land colours—not idealized nor overly dramatic, the caribou have coats that are a bit shaggy—i.e., they aren’t idealized caribou (!), but real living and struggling creatures. One sign of a good work of art is that the viewer wants to keep on looking at it… that’s true of your photograph.
