Case transferred to community justice committee

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A domestic assault case scheduled for the Nunavut Court of Justice has been transferred to Iqaluit’s community justice committee.

Pitseolak Oshutsiaq has pleaded guilty to an assault charge.

Justice committees are alternatives to often back-logged court systems.

Crown prosecutor Ken Kehler called the restorative approach “a novel resolution” in “uncharted territory.”

The facts in the Oshutsiaq case will be heard by justice committee members. Committee members will comment on the case and the comments will be forwarded to a judge who will determine sentencing.

The matter returns to court Aug. 6.
