Phone and cellular services are down in Kugaaruk.
Technicians from Northwestel, the largest telecommunications provider in the North, arrived in the community Friday afternoon to fix the issue, which has been ongoing since Thursday.
“Our central office in Kugaaruk is currently experiencing a commercial power failure, resulting in a disruption to telecommunications services in the community,” said Catherine Newsome, Northwestel’s director of marketing and communications., in an email.
A crew from Qulliq Energy Corp. is also expected to arrive to help investigate the cause of the outage.
The company first posted on its website that it is “aware of an issue currently impacting phone, internet and cellular services in Kugaaruk” on Nov. 7.
Kugaaruk’s Kitikmeot Inuit Association office and Kugaaruk Housing Authority both posted on Facebook that they will be open Friday despite the ongoing network issues.
