A brand of frozen chicken nuggets that’s popular throughout northern Canada has been recalled because of salmonella contamination.
On March 19, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall for Janes “pub style” chicken nuggets sold in 800-gram boxes, with the product number 0-69299-12490-3.
If you have the recalled product in your home, you should throw it out or return it to the store you bought it from.
If you become sick after eating the chicken nuggets, call your doctor.
Salmonella can cause serious illness, including fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. It can also later cause severe arthritis.
For the young, the elderly, those with compromised immune systems and pregnant women, salmonella can sometimes be deadly.
Food recalls for breaded chicken products have occurred fairly regularly in Canada in recent years. But that could change soon.
As of April 1, the food inspection agency is making producers of these products reduce salmonella levels to undetectable levels, the CBC reports.
Many producers of frozen chicken products have responded by beginning to cook the chicken before freezing it. That will likely make frozen chicken nuggets more expensive. It remains to be seen if it ends up making them safer to consume.
