Chip-pinching Arctic Bay teen sentenced to 30 days

An Arctic Bay youth who broke into a Northern store warehouse and pilfered bags of potato chips and Gatorade was sentenced to 30 days of open custody.

The 17-year-old boy cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act. He was on probation for assault, mischief and careless use of a firearm, among other charges, when he broke into the warehouse on July 1, 2002.

Three weeks later, the youth stole his dad’s truck keys and drove off with the vehicle.

He was charged with break and enter, taking a vehicle without consent, two counts of breaching a probation order and breaching conditions of his undertaking. He was arrested on July 19 and spent just a little more than two months in custody at the Youth Corrections Centre.

“You’ve demonstrated you’re unable or unwilling to respect court orders. You are putting yourself in custody,” said Justice Robert Kilpatrick.
