City of Iqaluit still plans to fly Greenland flag, despite delays

The City of Iqaluit is still not flying Greenland’s flag, despite city council’s decision to do so six months ago.
On Jan. 29, Iqaluit City council voted to raise the Greenland flag in light of comments from United States president Donald Trump about buying or otherwise taking over the autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
In March, city spokesperson Geoff Byrne said the flag-raising would coincide with the Inuit Circumpolar Council general assembly, which took place in Iqaluit last week.
But no flag went up.
The city “stands with its friends and neighbours in Greenland,” said Byrne Tuesday in an email, but “felt it was important that the [ICC general assembly] remain focused on the unity of Inuit from across the circumpolar region.”
City councillors met with the Greenlandic delegation, Byrne added, and expressed their support for Greenland in “discussions and engagement.”
The city’s intent “remains to proceed with the flag-raising and statement at a later date,” Byrne said, without offering a time frame.

If they want to focus on the unity of Inuit across the arctic, it’d be cool to see a flag representing that put up. Look up “ Vexillology Inuit People – Ancestral Colors Flag”. Such a beautiful flag and cool story behind the design elements. Something like this would be awesome to see across the different regions.
It’s ridiculous you’re using Trumps name to hide city incompetence.
Delayed virtue signalling.
Jeez! The city can’t even get it together to deliver the simplest act of performative activism from our incompetent councillors. No surprise there.
MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN
Make America Go Away 🙂
Wow ! If it takes over 6 months to raise a flag, no wonder they can’t achieve effective basic city services. This city really is a joke!!
The outrage being manufactured over this is a little difficult to take seriously.
Readers were given a photograph of a building without flagpoles, accompanied by the breathless observation that “no flag is in sight,” followed by comments attempting to connect a delayed symbolic gesture to every municipal service in Iqaluit.
Meanwhile, City employees have been busy doing the less clickable work: delivering water, repairing the utilidor, collecting garbage, paving the road to apex, repairing aging infrastructure, operating recreation facilities, supporting major community events and cleaning up the litter in city.
And despite what the comment section might suggest, the improvement is visible. The community is noticeably cleaner, crews are active seen working throughout town.
There are certainly legitimate issues on which the City should be questioned and held accountable. This is not serious journalism. It is rage bait designed to generate outrage, comments and clicks.
I am glad that City staff continue doing the work that actually keeps Iqaluit operating, even when that work does not produce a sensational headline!
Councillor, You might just have a point here, if the city was actually successfully delivering all essential services.
I challenge the city to produce call logs on the amount of calls they get from people who didn’t receive water delivered every day. I’m positive the numbers are staggering.
Then they want to expand development and have it rely on truck services when they can’t keep up with what they have.
Poor decisions .. poor management… poor performance.
As a trucked-services resident, I can say I have never run out of water except after a blizzard. I have been close a few times, but the truck has always arrived before the tank was empty.
For those of us who seek out in depth what are the matters needing more attention and correction the red herring of Greenland becoming another Puerto Rico to the US is borderline. When D. T. is all aboard on having Data Centres and with it massive environmental degradation for a start that is a concern. The objective without a doubt is to use the technology to manipulate influence and gather as much as they (the billionaire class) can on us for their benefit and at our expense in every possible way.
