The City of Iqaluit is warning residents of possible “unauthorized and unaffiliated fundraising initiatives” purporting to represent the city, in a news release issued Tuesday.

Neither the City of Iqaluit nor its recreation department are currently involved in any fundraising activities on social media, the release states.

“We received a single complaint over the weekend,” city spokesperson Geoff Byrne said in an email to Nunatsiaq News.

“While we’re unsure who is responsible, it seems to have originated from a compromised Facebook account impersonating a community member.”

The city’s release said any fundraising efforts by the City of Iqaluit will be announced exclusively through its official social media channels or website and will never be conducted by individuals.

It advised people to show caution and verify the authenticity of fundraising claims before contributing.

Anyone who suspects an individual or organization of unauthorized fundraising can report the suspicious activities to the Government of Nunavut’s Consumer Affairs Office at 1-888-975-5999 or via email at consumeraffairs@gov.nu.ca.
