City councillor resigns after five years of service
Simon Nattaq has resigned from city council effective Aug. 12. Deputy mayor Kirt Ejesiak read a letter announcing Nattaq’s departure during a city council meeting on Aug. 13. Nattaq was not present.
“Under the circumstances, he believes this is the right thing to do,” Ejesiak said.
A warrant for Nattaq’s arrest was issued last week after he failed to appear in court in connection with a sexual assault.
Council is deciding when to hold a by-election to fill positions vacated by Nattaq and Mathew Spence. Spence left Iqaluit in January 2002.
