City, union ink new wage deal
The City of Iqaluit and its 93 unionized workers have ratified a new collective agreement. The three-year deal covers the period between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2006.
New in this agreement is a clause introducing an across-the-board housing allowance for all employees, worth $700 per month in 2003, $750 per month in 2004, and $800 per month in 2005.
The agreement provides annual three per cent salary increases over the next three years, more vacation time for long-term workers, and increases in shift premiums, standby pay and settlement allowances.
A bilingual premium will give a $1000 annual bonus to any employee who can speak a second language.
The deal was ratified unanimously by city council on Aug. 12, following a ratification vote by the union on Aug. 11.
