CLEY rewards volunteers
Four caring Nunavummiut were recognized by Nunavut’s department of culture, language, elders and youth on April 19 for their volunteer efforts in their community.
Terry Aknavigak of Cambridge Bay won the youth award for his work as a basketball coach, and as a role model.
Bryan Doherty, a teacher in Iqaluit, took the adult award for work with the Rotary Club, the Kamatsiaqtut Help Line, the Iqaluit Centennial Library, and Inuksuk High School, where he works.
Meeka Alivaktuk took the elder award for working with the Saputiit Society and the Pujualusait group in Pangnirtung.
Finally, the Baker Lake Tear Drop Youth Centre won the group award for their work on suicide prevention and awareness and for their respite care program for young single mothers.
