Clyde River is looking for a hamlet councillor to fill a seat left vacant by former councillor Alan Cormack.
Council announced the vacancy over Facebook Aug. 12 and over the radio three days later, on Aug. 15.
Despite deciding to fill the position during the last council meeting on Aug. 8, plans to make the position open to the public were waylaid by a radio outage, said Billy Palluq, the hamlet’s assistant chief administrative officer.
Palluq did not comment on Cormack’s reasons for resigning.
At least one person has expressed an interest in taking the position and Palluq said he hopes to hear from others who might want to put their names forward.
“There hasn’t been much interest from people in running for council and we’re hoping to hear back before our next meeting,” he said.
According to the Nunavut Elections Act, council can fill a vacancy by appointing an eligible candidate to the position.
Clyde River residents interested in the position can reach out to the hamlet office or any of the hamlet’s elected leaders, which include Mayor Liemikie Palluq, deputy mayor Neve Paniloo, and councillors Gordon Kautuk, Mosa Palituq, Natanine Apak, Thomas Panniluk, Regilee Palituq, and Angela Killitee.
“We’re taking down the names of people who may be interested and the hamlet council will definitely consider it,” Palluq said.
Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 22.
The person who replaces Cormack will hold the position until the next municipal election on Oct. 27, 2025.
