College delays IT program

Nunavummiut who want to get into the computer business will have to wait an extra eight months to sign up for Nunavut Arctic College’s new information technology program.

College president Mac Clendenning had hoped to launch the program in January. Instead, work continues to find funding for the program, and an instructor who can develop the course material in a way that will most benefit future employers in Nunavut.

The college now hopes to launch a two-year pilot program with about 15 students in September, 2006.

“There’s a need for people with those skill sets all over the place,” Clendenning said Monday.

The college is working with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Community and Government Services to plan and fund the program, as well as other funding partners.

If the program is successful, IT could be included among base-funded courses in the future.
