Councillors want more back-in parking

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqaluit city councillors are calling for back-in parking in front of Arctic Ventures, after a young girl was injured by a truck backing out of the store’s parking lot last week.

“If we had back-in parking in front of Ventures, this incident wouldn’t have happened and this little girl wouldn’t have been run over,” Coun. Nancy Gillis said during a council meeting on Tuesday.

“I’m not crazy about the back-in parking, but I see the merits of it.”

Gillis asked city staff to look into introducing back-in parking in front of the store.

Coun. Simanuk Kilabuk agreed with Gillis that more back-in parking should be added around the city. “This was a very good idea, and has improved traffic a lot,” he said.

He suggested back-in parking should be introduced in front of Arctic Ventures, as well as the Quick Stop on Apex Road.
